Default Gnome applications

I have noticed that the default Gnome applications in Rocky are different compared to most other distributions.

For example, instead of the Gnome terminal, it’s ptyxis and instead of the evince (which is still the default one in Gnome 47), it’s “papers”. The latter was not supposed to replace the former until Gnome 49.

Is this something done by RedHat upstream and picked-up by Rocky? Any hints as to why these changes were made?

Yes, as Rocky is based on RHEL that means whatever defaults Red Hat choose, is what Rocky has.

Rocky is 1:1 with RHEL for a reason so that it is compatible and stable.

Evince is removed in RHEL 10

Evince, a document viewer for the GNOME desktop, is removed in RHEL 10. You can use the Papers application instead. Papers is a fork of Evince ported to Gtk 4, which aims to move at a more rapid pace with adding of new features, such as listing of signatures in PDF documents. Papers is partially written in Rust for improved stability.

Similarly, RHEL 9 had OpenSSL 3.0 before Fedora. See The experience of bringing OpenSSL 3.0 into Red Hat Enterprise Linux and Fedora

Overall, RHEL is not restricted to have what Fedora has. Red Hat can and does choose what they commit to support up to a decade.
