Rocky 8.8 (Green Obsidian) freezes & reboots in different instances

Hello Folks…
I have been seeing a weird problem for a few weeks now.
If I open certain applications/software then Rocky Linux 8.8 just freezes and reboots. I have seen this happen in following cases.

  1. opening spreadsheets & .doc/docx on OnlyOffice Desktop Editors
  2. Opening an image to edit using KolourPaint.
  3. Opening Floorp Lightning (doesnt open at all)
  4. Opening Ungoogled Chromium browser (doesnt open at all).

Can someone help me get around this? I have following details
a. Kernel Version - Linux 4.18.0-477.27.1.el8_8.x86_64 x86_64
b. system
Processor - Intel Core i5 11400
RAM - 32 GB DDR4 (16*2 sticks, were not a kit)
/home/user directory has ~ 3GB disk space left. Linux is installed on a 120GB SSD

I am happy to provide any logs - but as you can see I don’t know what to offer. Which implies I hardly know where it will be available. May I request you to please indicate where it would be available so that it saves your time.
Thanks and regards,
nmp.

KolourPaint issue occurs when I try to save any image.
It repeated the behaviour again. I posted above message, as I wanted to save my typed info from it, rather than try and check what happens only to lose above message after another reboot.

Greetings @nmp,

Hhave you done a dnf upgrade? You should do that if you haven’t to:

A) get your distro to the latest supported version
B) you get any package updates that might fix your problem

When that is done, let us know what happens.

Ok, but they all sound like unsupported packages.

Rocky has LibreOffice, not sure what “OnlyOffice” is.

Thre’s a chromium browser in “epel”, is that the one you’re using?

dnf --enablerepo "epel" list chromium

it has a very interesting description

Summary : A WebKit (Blink) powered web browser that Google doesn't want you to
             : use

It sure sounds like you might have a bad RAM module. I would suggest you run something like Memtest86 or Memtest86+ for 2+ full passes.

hello @sspencerwire I have not run it yet. I will try to do it.
Prior to that, I was thinking of running memtest86 as @tqhoang has suggested.

Thanks to both of you.

Hello @gerry666uk
I am not sure where I downloaded from or whether they are officially supported packages.
Onlyoffice allows me to have a offline Office Suite (i.e. gives cloud as an OPTION, rather than showing it down my throat like, Micro$h!t) which is what drew me to it. I am sorry I don’t recall why I eliminated LibreOffice from the options that I had. KolourPaint is the official one - I am certain I did NOT install it.
I am not sure of the chromium - I can’t figure out the way I installed it.
I had saved the results of a history command (using pipe |) when I was in root mode, and it does not show chromium in it. The list does have OnlyOffice.

Even so; I have few questions -

  1. How do I uninstall/remove these rogue (for lack of a better word) pieces of software ? I do have a tool called in Applications > System Tools > Software which is like an app store, if you get what I mean.

Within this, there is Floorp, but what I have is NOT installed from here, and anyway, mine is called Floorp Lightning. Neither is my Chromium Browser from here.
  2. I can’t seem to update my Firefox 115.4.0esr (64-bit) how do I do it?
  3. What system log or file should I look for to find the origin of these software on my computer?

@gerry666uk and Everyone who contributed, Thanks for your time

This, did it.
I am happy to report that my system does not have any of the mentioned issues. Thanks @sspencerwire Steven!

Marking this as solution;

but I still need to know how to uninstall stuff like floorp lightning and ungoogled chromium from my system. If anyone can shed light on it, that would be great

Just to add, I have not done the memtest as suggested by @tqhoang (thanks for enlightening me about this)
May do it later, but not now as my issue has been resolved.
