Been testing this version on some dell optiplexes, there are stability issues which could stem from kde or x11/wayland issues.
Viewing pdf files and printing via network printers always crashes. I found the paper software on the rocky repo, which works fine. However images does the same especially Gwenview (crashes via upon trying to print).
Sometimes chromium browsers such as brave or chrome (only for testing crashes & reboots rocky).
The preinstalled Firefox takes about 1 minute to launch, very unstable and slow - i simply just rm it - dnf remove firefox -y.
Installed software Icons on the panel have no logos (i edit the desktop file or find the logos) and system icons such as shutdown, restart…sometimes disappeared, i delete the kde config files to regenerate the panel from scratch.
The most interesting thing is i can’t shutdown the devices - all the devices reboot. I do have LAN cables and some peripherals inserted via USB testing external drives, scanners and others but that worked fine on rocky 9.6v gnome? (I think).
Could anyone please, recommend an img viewer and a stable pdf viewer on the rocky Linux repo? What could be causing all these issues please? Any info would be appreciated
I am testing Arch also but kde works fine but obviously the environment is different. If i could resolve the shutdown and crashing PDF issues, that would suffice for now .
Sounds to me you got hardware problems if things crash or reboot.
Google can help you find alternatives. Just search “linux pdf viewer” or “linux image viewer”. There are versions for KDE, Gnome, and other desktops as well. Evince should help you view pdf’s, for example.
If KDE is unstable, then that isn’t a Rocky problem - that comes from EPEL and so we are not responsible for it if it doesn’t work or crashes. Maybe you don’t have enough ram in your computers, maybe the ram is faulty or other hardware problems are causing your crashes and slowness.
I would suggest clean install with Rocky and default Gnome desktop, and then see if you still have problems. If you don’t and it works fine, then stop using KDE, simple
Thanks, i did test gnome on 9.6v but not on 10v. I prefer kde or just terminal line with tile non-gui.
Gnome is just horrid . I will wait for your other desktop ver on RL 10v XFCE or cinnamon.
I think it is a hardware issue (as well as x11), but the RAM is 8GB minimum, however i want to know, if you know of any pdf and img viewers on the rocky repo or any that could be installed directly. (dnf install x).
Would you recommended installing another desktop over kde please?
If you install nix-shell (nixos package manager) then youll be able to install just about anything.
I did a fresh install of v10 and that was the first thing i did other then epl nvidia. I got tired of the lack of package availability on rocky.
You can check if the required software is available on nix package search on their website and cooy and paste the paramaters into the terminal and it will be available system wide as it store the packages into nix store but is symlinked globally.
Or even distrobox or boxbuddy and create the container of choice (fedora arch or deb etc) and use boxbuddy (4 example) to hardlink the shortcut into the kde menu.
These 2 methods kept me sane using rocky at the time.
You can also install wps office (flatpak) as it has the pdf editor built into the suite. Ignore what people say about wps… they live in tin foil hat land…
These methods i used both on v9 and v10 that allowed me to keep using rocky or else i woukd have mothballed it within 24hrs
