Rocky Linux 9 - OS freezes

Good afternoon,

I’ve been noticing an issue with my Rocky Linux installation for the last couple of days, when I boot up the laptop(HP EliteBook 840 14 inch G9) the OS sometimes it freezes/hungs-up, can’t click on any links/tabs, can’t open new tabs on browser, the mouse coursers doesn’t or moves sometimes.
I then proceed with pessisn the keyboard keys Ctrl+Alt+F1 until I get a terminal black screen and then I press Ctrl+Alt+Delete to reboot the OS.
After that the following message shows up on the screen:

I checked the log messages at /var/log/messages and found the following information:

Anything else I should look for on the error messages?

Thank you very much.

Cheers,

I’m not convinced that the errors from /var/log/messages are the same as the ones in the screenshot? The screenshot is showing [drm], possibly to do with the display manager, and also something about not being able to mount.

Hi gerry666uk,

Thank you very much for your reply.

I couldn’t copy the full message it was too much text to paste here.
Not sure which message could pertain to this behaviour.

In the mean time I’ve upgraded the kernel from version 5.14 to 6.8.3.

I’m going to keep on monitoring the behaviour, to check if it keeps freezing, and I’ll keep on checking the messages for clues if that is still the behaviour.

Thank you very much,

Cheers,

Next time it happens, and after you press CTRL+ALT+F1, try running ‘dmesg’ in the console, you might need to pipe to ‘more’.

How long does it run perfectly before it starts to freeze?

It could be something serious like failing hardware. It’s also strange that secure boot is off.

Perhaps: dmesg -T | less
With less one can scroll back and forth, and also search.
The -T option converts timestamps from seconds_from_boot to date_time.

Hi @ gerry666uk and @jlehtone

After upgrading the kernel from 5.14 to 6.8.3 there were no more freezes.

Everything was working fine until today at the end of the afternoon when Rocky Linux 9.3 printed a message says the OS needed updating.

I restarted the OS and said yes to do the updates during reboot.

After restart I noticed that there us no network/Internet, no ethernet and no wifi!!!

So I issued the command uname -a on the terminal only to find out that the kernel version was reverted back to version 5.14, and also noticed that it lost sound, no sound card detected, which means it lost the drivers for the NIC’s(ethernet and wifi) and sound card!!!

Kind regards.

This “convenience method” reboots system, runs dnf up and the reboots (or powers off, depending on whether you chose Restart… or Power Off…). The first reboot ensures that there are no user sessions and the second that all the updated packages get into use.

The update did install new 5.14.0-362.x kernel packages. I’m not quite sure the GRUB bootloader orders the boot entries for the installed packages, but clearly the “last installed” becomed the default, so the bootloader did load the 5.14.0-362.x rather than the kernel-ml version.

The 5.14.0-y kernel packages do not contain the drivers that you do need.
The kernel-ml packages do contain the drivers that you do need.
Therefore, you have to boot with the kernel-ml kernel.

You still have both kernels installed, so you should be able to choose the 6.8.3 from the bootloader’s menu.
In order to not choose on boot, you should change what is the default. See Chapter 26. Working with GRUB 2 Red Hat Enterprise Linux 7 | Red Hat Customer Portal

I have not come across this on Rocky/RHEL. How does one enable it, is it a GUI thing, or is there a config file somewhere? It might exaplain why some people on the forum talk about their systems “automatically” upgrading themselves?

I think it is “PackageKit” that is launched by Gnome session. It does sniff at some point (soonish after logout) whether enabled repos have updates available and shows message if there are. Then, on logout it offers to install (even when one has manually used dnf up, so it caches its initial result, rather than checking again). I wrote “convenience”, because (a) it tells regular user that something is available, and (b) regular user can initialte the upgrade process without sudo, etc.
