Latest update 8.7 - 4.18.0-425.10.1.e18_7.x86_64 : soft lockup

Good day,

Yesterday I installed the latest updates and I ran into a soft lockup after reboot.

What could be the cause of this and how can I solve this?

Do you have any kmod package installed? Then this is due to a bug in the kernel.

Some of elrepo’s kmod packages are affected by this bug and they will be rebuilt against the latest kernel.

Thank you for your reply.

Indeed I have a wifi driver installed.

This means I have to remove it prior to each new kernel update?

But that bug appeared in the kernel prior to 10.1 .
What is the current working kernel for you?
uname -r
at the command prompt will tell you.

Or you can wait for a day or so. Updated version of kmods should be available soon.

You can follow the progress here:

@B3rtm3n

The only wifi packages that are affected by the kernel bug are kmod-ath5k and kmod-iwlegacy. They both have been updated and are now syncing to the mirror sites.

kmod-ath5k-0.0-9.el8_7.elrepo.x86_64.rpm
kmod-iwlegacy-0.0-9.el8_7.elrepo.x86_64.rpm

Yes that is correct.

I am using the ath5k. Thx for the info.

Is this a one time bug or will this occur with each new kernel update?

Update.

Just installed latest version of ath5k driver and after reboot all is working fine.

Thank you for all your help.

Glad to hear things are working again.

It was a bug in kernel version 4.18.0-425.3.1.el8.x86_64, so was a “one-time” bug. It affected a number of kmods because this was a “GA” kernel for el8.7.
