Is Mate desktop still going to be available

Hi, I am new to Rocky, but an old friend of RedHat, starting from 1998. I just downloaded and installed Rocky 9.6 Mate desktop, and I am very happy about it. However, I don’t see a Mate download of Rocky 10.0, I hope it has not been disconnected ….

First, Rocky 9 does not “have” Mate. EPEL 9 does. EPEL 9 builds packages that work in all EL distros. The question/request is thus for EPEL, not Rocky. See Requesting a new package in EPEL :: Fedora Docs

Second, el10 (i.e. Rocky 10 too) has only Wayland, no Xorg. EPEL can build Mate for el10 only if Mate can be used with Wayland. I have no idea whether that is possible. Ask Mate devs about that.

Sorry for the wrong question. I don’t know what EPEL might be. I am running now a distro that claims to be Rocky Linux, one of the options was Mate desktop. Mate does not work with (yet) with Wayland, so I guess it has no future with Rocky or EPEL.

Red Hat makes a distro called “RHEL”. It has rather small selection of packages. For example, only Gnome as desktop environment.
Rocky tries to be bug-for-bug compatible with RHEL; practically same small set of packages.

EPEL, Extra Packages for Enterprise Linux, Extra Packages for Enterprise Linux (EPEL) :: Fedora Docs is a “third-party” project that builds additional packages for RHEL (and hence for Rocky too).

Some ways to install Rocky do “for convenience” enable use of EPEL and therefore offer packages from EPEL – almost like out-of-the-box.

Actually, it does.

“Have” as in “Who builds the RPM packages?”

Irrelevant from the point of view of someone whose objective is to install the operating system.

“Is there a version of Rocky 10 that includes the Mate desktop” is absolutely a valid question.

The answer, as far as I can tell from a brief perusal of the Mate and Fedora webpages, is that work on making Mate integrate with Wayland is ongoing and at least several people are running Mate on Fedora 42 (though I don’t know what they’re using for a display server) so it appears to be at least technically possible for Mate to become available as a desktop on Rocky 10.

Whether anyone is actually working on or toward that is something that I don’t know. I would personally be very interested in that as well since I run Mate on all of my Rocky 8 and 9 installations.

True.

Operating without knowledge about what is behind a button just smells too Apple/Microsoft for me. My bias.

I don’t think it’s irrelevant; packages from the official repos are supported by both RHEL and Rocky, and are unlikely to break during an update. Packages in EPEL, are not supported by RHEL, so the person is on their own if one of those unofficial packages goes wrong.

is the name in this entries the same as you?

thank you
