IBM s390x Support

Hi,

I would like to discuss a toppic regarding the s390x supprt for Rocky Linux 9.x.

Kind regards,
Florian

What would you like to discuss? s390x is supported as a main architecture (not AltArch) in Rocky 9 + 10. Similar to the upstream RHEL and CentOS Stream.

@skip77 Maybe related to this: Try to install Rocky Linux s390x image under IBM z/VM on zPDT

No replies yet, so probably wondering about how many people use it on s390x or how can get the problem fixed if not many people using it.

Just a guess, at least until they come back and actually ask the questions

I ried to install Rocky Linux under IBM z/VM but it fails starting sshd. Therefore I can not login as described with install@host and therefore the installer process does not go on, starting vnc. There is on the z/VM console no error message indicating why ssd does not start. So I am lost how to continue with the installation.

Yes, indeed. I thought I put that on the wrong forum.
Seems that not so much people using Rocky Linux on s390x.
If needed I could maybe support the team maintaining the s390x port.

Hi @skip77!

I asked a coworker who works at a hosting company and has played with Rocky on s390x under VM. He told me that he has also encountered similar problems with sshd not booting during install.

What he recommended:

  • To check if the network interface is functional at that stage - if it has no IP or is not active, sshd can crash without leaving obvious errors.
  • If you can access journalctl from the install environment, you might find a clue there.

All the best!

Unfortunately, there are not too much options. I see that the IP ist working, because the VM responds to pings.

I wanted to send the logs to a rsyslog server but it is nothing received. It seems to be too early in the process. As there is no shell the logs in /tmp aren‘t accessible.

The sshd is started via systemd in the squshfs?
