Crushingly slow display since upgrade to 9.6

Since upgrading to rocky 9.6 from 9.5 (fortunately only on a trial system) the display has become unusably slow, e.g. on moving mouse from one window to another it takes 5 seconds to register it’s in a different window, on typing a second or two goes by after each keypress to register on the display, etc. That’s on Gnome Classic on Xorg. If I switch to Wayland it works at full speed - but Wayland refuses (and already did before upgrading) to give me the screen resolution I need, so is unusable for a different reason. GDM works normally, as do the ttys if I use them instead of a graphical interface, and with full screen resolution (1920x1080).

Another issue that arose at the same time is that the system seems to think that I’m pressing the f key when I’m not; reverting the same hardware to 9.5 makes that go away also.

Furthermore, while on 9.5 the process called Xorg typically used around 1% of a cpu at most when the screen was static with no mouse or keyboard activity, on 9.6 it never falls below 30%, and if there is any mouse movement or keyboard activity it goes up to 99% and sticks there until everything is still again.

I tried downgrading three xorg.* packages (xorg-x11-server-Xorg, xorg-x11-server-common, xorg-x11-server-Xwayland) to their previous versions, but that made no difference - still slow, so it’s something else that’s changed.

Any ideas would be most welcome ? - thanks.

Any hardware information? Is this an SBC with strange graphics hardware or something?

Thank you Tony for the sensible question. I could find nothing helpful in the log files with the exception of a single occurrence of a SELinux AVC complaining that Xorg-wrap couldn’t get sysadmin capability (but I mean single once on one of many boots). There is no Xwrapper.config file saved in /etc/X11 . Booting the system with SELinux permissive doesn’t improve the situation. I will try to attach the file ~/.local/share/xorg/Xorg.0.log in a separate post as I’m having difficulty working out how to do such an attachment correctly.

Thank you Brian likewise. No, it’s an Intel server - entirely normal apart from being a tad old. The video chip is mgag200se; this is driven by the mgag200 kernel module.

I can add a bit more info gleaned from further experiments:

Unplugging mouse and keyboard makes no difference.

I think that the occurrence of long strings of false-input fffffffff is due to the system registering keypress of the f key but not registering the keyrelease.

Downgrading gnome-shell to the 9.5 version doesn’t help.

Any ideas for what other packages might be worth downgrading to their previous versions would be of interest.

The only place I see long strings of f’s is in this “modeset” line, that would not indicate a keyboard input

  • modeset refers to kernel modesetting, which is responsible for setting display resolution and depth during boot and runtime.

Misunderstanding here. I’m not referring to (non-existent) strings of
false-input fffff in the log file. What’s happening is that when I’m
trying to use this excruciatingly slow system, sometimes when I type an
f, or an F, or a f, or a f, I get long strings of ordinary
fffffff appearing in whatever window has the input focus - for which I’m
hypothesising that keypress is being registered but keyrelease isn’t
(??).

I’m also getting a pile of messages in terminal windows looking like
these:

imDefLkup.c,370: Tried to fabricate a wrong key event.
imDefLkup.c,366: The key event is already fabricated.

Yes, correct, BUT there is a reason for the f behaving differently from
the other keys, in that in my setup it’s used in combination with one of
the Meta keys to move a window to the front or to the back - and
therefore Xorg receives the Meta-F and occupies itself with moving
window contents, therein missing the keyrelease event (I’m guessing).

I would echo what @FrankCox wrote: that the next step should be to try
a new keyboard.

If I had one I would ! But actually, I’m not convinced that the keyboard
is the problem, because all the rest of it occurs even when the keyboard
is unplugged, and the keyboard still works totally fine with 9.5 .

But I am in the meantime gradually making progress with understanding
which new packages might contain the problem: at the minimal upgrade
end, upgrading only kernel, kernel-core, kernel-modules, and
kernel-modules-core does NOT cause a problem, so it’s unlikely to be due
to e.g. the keyboard driver module.

But it all takes a lot of time…

trying again to avoid misunderstanding, are you asking us how to identify the top processes using CPU?

I would recommend you do this command:

 top -b -o %CPU | head -n 20

it runs the “top” command in “batch” mode (non-interactively) and “-o” is the sort field, by CPU in this instance.

In interactive mode of top, the top processes are:

Xorg (always)
gnome-shell (always)

with third place taken by one of the following:

kworker14/1:events
systemd
gnome-terminal- (sic; it ends in -, and it’s not because it’s cut off at the edge of the window)
ibus-daemon

and everything below that on less than 1% of a cpu.

In batch mode, first place is Xorg (always), second place is usually top (with 2-3% of a cpu) but occasionally gnome-shell, and everything below that is on 0.0% .

I’m continuing meantime to try to find the maximal set of packages I can upgrade without causing the problem.

Here are the findings from establishing which packages are responsible for this problem. It doesn’t seem to be possible to upgrade the individual packages separately (at least on my system, because of loads of other things depending on them).

The following packages were responsible for the extremely slow operation:

Correction: I had thought that errors such as

imDefLkup.c,370: Tried to fabricate a wrong key event.
imDefLkup.c,366: The key event is already fabricated.
imDefLkup.c,430: The application disposed a key event with 3201 serial.

were caused by:

linux-firmware-20250604-151.2.el9_6.noarch
linux-firmware-whence-20250604-151.2.el9_6.noarch

but now they’ve happened once without these packages being upgraded.

In the mesa case I can remove the relevant problem by downgrading to the 9.5 packages (24.1.2-3.el9) and it reappears on reupgrade.

Now I would value any advice on what to do to work out what is wrong with these current versions of these packages… thanks, Roger.

This issue has now been fixed by Jocelyn Falempe of RedHat, by reverting a patch which had ignored which parts of a window needed refreshing and refreshed the whole lot every time. The fixed mesa packages are version 24.2.8-3.el9_6 - I have copies if needed by anybody.

However, the patch was needed to fix some other issue that hadn’t affected me, so it’s not clear that this fix will do in the long term.
