Bug in i915 video driver?

Hate posting another thread, but I’m a bit stumped here, and the nature of the issue is making troubleshooting problematic.

New computer with Alder Lake chipset, Rocky 9 installed. System boots fine, my display works as expected, but when I go into Settings and then to Display, it comes up as ‘Unknown Display’, unable to change resolution. That part isn’t so bad, but I’m running several systems (including a Rocky 8 box) on a KVM switch, I’ve found that if I switch to another system for more than a few seconds, when I switch back I can’t get the display to come up, and I’m forced to reboot the box.

System has dual DisplayPort outputs, no VGA or HDMI.

I installed a package called monitor-edid which would supposedly read the EDID settings for the display, but these commands returned no results, which seems to me indicates that the system isn’t reading my display at all. But I’m stumped on how to troubleshoot from here.

What do you see in /var/log/Xorg. 0. log?

I’m not convinced that i915 is the correct driver for this new gpu. Might want to google around and see what spec information is available on the Alder Lake gpu. Phoronix might be a good place to look also.

I found this article that seemed to indicate that AlderLake-S GT1 would use the i915 driver, it also indicated support issues with kernel 5.15, and Rocky is using 5.14, no idea if any fixes have made their way back into 5.14 or not.

Below is the Xorg.0.log file. I saw some video information there but I’ve never had need to troubleshoot this sort of issue so I’m not sure what’s actually relevant here.

Ya, I don’t see anything. I use a KVM switch between laptop and RL server and monitor is usually off. I have problems when turning on the monitor to log into RL. It will claim no signal til I’ve fiddled with up|dn arrows or switch between console / graphic modes but I never have issues when a session is ongoing on both machines of switching between them. Have you tried unplugging -replugging in the display port connector on the Dell when this happens?
What is the history with the KVM?

KVM is a StarTech.com SV431DPUA2, 4 port DisplayPort switch. It’s under a year old, has a newer MacMini attached, a Rocky 8.6 system (Intel i7-7700T, Intel HD Graphics 630). Also previously had another Rocky 9 system (Intel i5-6600T, Intel HD Graphics 530).

No KVM issues with those other Rocky systems, but the graphics chipsets are older versions, and both of those correctly recognized my monitor brand info correctly and displayed this in the Settings/Display panel. Also had no problems switching to an inactive (but not sleeping) system and waking the display when switching the KVM. So far I’ve found nothing that would trigger this new system with the
AlderLake-S GT1 chipset to display a screen after switching away.

I’ve found this bugzilla report that seems similar to what I’ve found, I’ve added some comments there.

Just an update on this bug, I tested RHEL 9.1 Beta this weekend and found that this includes fixes for this issue, possibly related to Alder Lake compatibility. So Rocky 9.1 should likewise resolve this issue.
