Problem with nvidia drivers on 9.1/9.2

A few weeks ago I installed 9.1 on my AMD box, followed a few days later by installing the nvidia drivers (It has a GTX 750 Ti card) and they worked fine.

a few days/weeks later I noticed a message during boot that said something to this effect: Nvidia module failed to load, reverting to Nouveau. (that’s not exact, but is the gist).

I did a reinstall of the nvidia drivers and it seemed to be working, but more recently it recurred and nothing I have tried now makes the nvidia drivers work, not even reinstalling them again.

an excerpt from /var/log/messages:

which seems to imply that nouveau is blacklisted and nvidia not.

Over the weekend I installed 9.2 on another PC, this one an Intel chip with a (now old) Nvidia 790 video card (much more powerful than my 750), and it exhibits the same symptoms. Whatta pain!

Anyone got any clues for me on this? Guidance gladly appreciated, and thanks in advance!

Fred

Are you using secure boot?

Not sure if this helps, but I had problems trying to install NVidia drivers on my laptop (running Rocky Linux 9.1, now upgraded to 9.2), and finally managed to install the drivers with these instructions (with secure boot enabled):

Thanks for the reply!

I saw that posting online yesterday, but since I’m NOT using secureboot I assumed it didn’t apply to me. Am I assuming too much?

Fred

I guess it isn’t necessarily solution to you, but I also fought with the nvidia drivers not getting loaded, and I guess in my case the reason was secure boot.

Not probably related to your problem, but I noticed you have “nvidia-drm.modeset=1” in your kernel parameters. While I am not exactly sure what the meaning of that parameter is and why and when it is needed, in my case it causes my laptop to hang completely (when I try to use some program that utilizes the NVidia GPU on my laptop, e.g. running the Steam gaming client).

I ran into this when trying to find instructions how to enable vsync, as my laptop was running too hot as it was running games as fast as it can, at 160 frames per second or so. I wanted to limit the framerates to max 60 fps so that the laptop would run cooler, hence vsync.

Since my laptop uses Optimus (NVidia GPU + Intel HD graphics), I can’t set the needed parameters in the NVidia XServer settings utility. So I tried that same kernel parameter as suggested in this discussion:

(I just added that parameter to kernel options in grub edit mode). The laptop would run fine until I tried to run e.g. Steam, at which point the system became completely unresponsive, the mouse wouldn’t move etc., and for some reason the CAPS LOCK light on the keyboard was blinking. Rebooting the machine again without that option fixed it, but still no vsync.

Since I couldn’t find a way to enable vsync, I just don’t use that option (at least as a kernel parameter, not sure if it can be set somewhere else too), and instead I used MangoHUD as a frame limiter, without vsync:

In Steam games this launch option limits the framerate to 60 fps:

MANGOHUD_CONFIG=no_display,fps_limit=60 mangohud %command%

So long story short: are you sure you need that kernel parameter, and if not, could it be causing problems for you too? I guess you could safely test it by editing that in the grub boot menu; if it doesn’t work, rebooting will bring the option back.

Sorry I am merely grasping at straws here, there’s a lot I don’t understand about the way the proprietary NVidia drivers work (or don’t work) in Linux…

if using rpmfusion, you can get newer driver for Rocky 8 / 9 by using
dnf update --enablerepo=rpmfusion-nonfree-updates-testing

Theses 525 drivers serie will be in stable updates in a couple of days…

Feedbacks welcomed.

yeah, those are the ones I have.

Fred

I’m also having problems with the Nvidia drivers on Rocky 9

I’ve recently installed Rocky 9.2 on a host with an Nvidia Quadro P4000 using Nvidia drivers installed via a ‘run’ file downloaded directly from Nvidia - I’m also using lightdm/Mate (no Wayland involved)

I’ve tried various latest versions on the Nvidia drivers (525.116.04, 530.41.03) - all have the same issue:

Xorg locks up almost immediately after starting - top shows Xorg using 100% CPU - and is restarting every few seconds

nvidia-smi hangs for a few seconds and then returns ‘No devices were found’

dmesg reports every few seconds:

[Tue May 23 09:31:57 2023] NVRM: GPU 0000:02:00.0: RmInitAdapter failed! (0x25:0x65:1462)
[Tue May 23 09:31:57 2023] NVRM: GPU 0000:02:00.0: rm_init_adapter failed, device minor number 0
[Tue May 23 09:32:06 2023] NVRM: GPU 0000:02:00.0: RmInitAdapter failed! (0x25:0x65:1462)
[Tue May 23 09:32:06 2023] NVRM: GPU 0000:02:00.0: rm_init_adapter failed, device minor number 0
[Tue May 23 09:32:14 2023] NVRM: GPU 0000:02:00.0: RmInitAdapter failed! (0x25:0x65:1462)
[Tue May 23 09:32:14 2023] NVRM: GPU 0000:02:00.0: rm_init_adapter failed, device minor number 0

(I’m assuming each of the above sets of messages coincide with Xorg restarting ?)

There is nothing obvious wrong reported in /var/log/Xorg.0.log

I’ve used very similar configs/setups on CentOS 7.9 and Rocky 8.7 - and haven’t had this issue

I don’t know if my issue is connected to what has been reported here ?

If you have any issue with nvidia driver packaged from rpmfusion. Please create an issue to bugzilla.rpmfusion.org with the generated report: Howto/NVIDIA - RPM Fusion

Well, to my surprise, when I ran ‘dnf update’ earlier today it showed a bunch of nvidia packages for updates, and even nicer, once installed and rebooted, they worked! Unlike the earlier ones–I’m guessing there was something wrong with the 525.78 packages–the newer 525.116 ones that I now have are working both on my main computer and the “spare” I was testing with.

The problem I reported in this thread appears to have been fixed by updating the BIOS on the workstation
