GNOME/Wayland crashes after clean v9.4 Workstation installation

Built a brand new computer yesterday. Installed Rocky Linux Desktop/Workstation Live Image v9.4 (Gnome).

Processor: AMD Ryzen 5 8600G
Barebone PC: ASRock DeskMini X600
RAM: Kingston SORAM Kingston D5 5200 32GB C42 K2 (x2)
Rocky Linux Desktop/Workstation Live Image v9.4 (AMD/Intel x86_64)
BIOS updated to the latest version (issue the same before and after the BIOS update)

The installation was possible, but I did experience many crashes during the installation, where I would try to set one of the required settings during the installation, for example setting the destination partition, and the installation would be interrupted. Black screen for a few seconds, and then, I would be asked to logon again as the Live User, and would have to start the installation from scratch again. In the end I was able to install successfully, after many tries. After the successful installation, and a dnf update, logging on to the Gnome desktop, and working in Gnome, for example opening Firefox, navigating to a URL, scrolling up an down, will crash Gnome/Wayland. The screen goes black for a few seconds, and then I am prompted to log on to Gnome again. The previously opened windows are closed, and whatever I was doing, I have to start again. This is 100% reproducable on this machine. Opening any app under Gnome, and working with the window, even opening the terminal and resizing the terminal a few times, reproduces the issue. I installed the KDE and xfce versions or Rocky Linux v9.4, and they showed the same behaviour. In the KDE version I had to restart the PC in order to be able to log on again. No additional software, other than the dnf update, was installed.

Accessing the terminal using SSH shows no issues, and everything seems to work fine here, which is all I really need. But I did want to report the crashes, in case someone else sees a similar issue. Below the log just before, during and just after the crash.

Perhaps someone has an idea what the actual cause is and how the issue might be avoided, based on the logs below.

Regards

Rudolf Bargholz

Iā€™ve had to use kernel-ml or kernel-lt from elrepo to get a stable desktop on a system with AMD graphics. The AMD driver in the Rocky kernel seems to be seriously buggy.

Thanks. Will try to see if this helps.

Ok, was able to test this morning, but the issue is not resolved using kernel-ml. I am able to browse a bit longer in Firefox, but at some point the system freezes, and I am forced to log on again, or reboot.

[rb@otrs-znuny ~]$ uname -r
6.10.4-1.el9.elrepo.x86_64

Grateful for the help though. Thanks.

What does that mean, is it the real Rocky dvd1 or something else?

I canā€™t see the exact graphics card details, or is it some ā€œintegratedā€ thing?

The graphics were failing during install, so not Gnome (unless anacoda uses gnome in some way?)

The amdgpu is failing dozens of times, gnome is simply saying that the graphics have failed. I donā€™t think itā€™s the kernel itself, but probably the module that talks to the graphics.

First thing is to check the hardware, e.g. use a different live o/s.

If it was a real graphics card checking all bus connections, power deviation etc.

Thanks for looking into this.

Tested the following downloads from

https://dl.rockylinux.org/pub/rocky/9/live/x86_64/Rocky-9-Workstation-x86_64-latest.iso (GNOME)
https://dl.rockylinux.org/pub/rocky/9/live/x86_64/Rocky-9-KDE-x86_64-latest.iso (KDE)
https://dl.rockylinux.org/pub/rocky/9/live/x86_64/Rocky-9-XFCE-x86_64-latest.iso (XFCE)

All installations showed the same behavior, crashing after a bit of normal work trying to assign values for the installation. But in all cases I was able to actually install Rocky Linux. After the installation, the same behavior was displaled when, for example, just doing a few normal things in Firefox.

The GPU is on the AMD chip (Soc), so I imagine the AMD SoC drivers for the GPU just need some work. I do not really need to use the GNOME interface, and can do most of my work in the terminal via SSH, so this is not that much of an issue for me. Just posted this in case someone else has a similar issue.

When you say ā€œuse a different live o/sā€, do you mean I ought to try Ubuntu or Debian on the machine?

Other people are reporting this with AMD integrated graphics across many distros.

Can you try:

Do a clean boot (bare metal).

Wait for the graphics to fail at least once (screen goes black etc).

As root.

dmesg | grep -i "amdgpu"

dmesg | grep -i "amdgpu"

Here the result:
