Viable HW upgrade for AI on Rocky 8?

Hi al
I have a Rocky 8 home lab server with a ryzen 2600.
It’s mostly a KVM machine managed with ansible.
Currently has a old nvidia GT 620 for the video output (using the nouveau driver, I usually just login using ssh and cockpit)

I was wondering if I could upgrade it to make it viable as a lowspec AI lab machine.

The idea would be

  • Upgrade it to a ryzen 5 5700g and using it as main video out.
  • Upgrade ram to the maximum (I think 128gb on that MB)
  • Put a nvidia 4060 16gb inside (to attach to a VM dedicated to the AI experiments)

Do you think would be possibile with the rocky 8.9?

Thank you
K

Do you mean you keep the GT620 for video output, and the new 4060 will only be used for CUDA, somehow connected to a guest VM?

No i wanted to use the integrated graphics of the amd 5700g I don’t have enough PCI-e slots

Hi all,
I would like to update you on this experiment
I’ve upgraded my server to a ryzen 5700g, and, with some minor glitches during boot, the video output of the ryzen works.

so the 5700g is a viable APU for Rocky 8

I’ll open a different post for the problems of attaching a GPU to a VM

Thank You
K
