Rocky Linux 9.5 Signal Out of Range on Display

Alright, I ran into a new one for me personally today.

I tried installing a Rocky 9.5 image(freshly downloaded today) on a new machine and when the installer loaded, instead of getting the standard graphical installer, the only thing on the monitor was “Signal Out of Range”. That being said, I went back to an old Rocky 9.2 image and that seemed to work.

However, after installing all of the updates to bring that install up to date, the same behavior occurs.

The setup here is a very old Viewsonic VA90b monitor and an also-aging Dell 2161DS KVM switch.
Having done some cursory research on that error message, it would appear that the resolution/refresh rate of the signal at either the KVM Switch or the Monitor is unsupported. First thing on my agenda for Monday is to try and swap out the monitor to isolate where the “Signal not found” is coming from, but I was wondering if anyone here had any knowledge about what might’ve changed between Rocky 9.2 and 9.5 to cause such behavior(I did look through the release notes/known issues, but didn’t see anything that caught my eye as relevant).

That being said, I would appreciate any thoughts on how to start poking around to either find the root setting in Rocky that changed and/or a way to set it to something weak enough(800x600x60) to make sure that the monitor can work.

I have got a whole bunch of other machines I would like to bring up to current, but that’s going to be problematic until I can figure out what’s causing my KVM switch setup to not work.

Much thanks in advance

Yank the switch, hook the monitor up directly and see what happens.

Then you’ll know if it’s the switch or the monitor at fault.
