OwnCloud desktop client on Rocky Linux 8?

Hi,

One of my workstations is running Rocky Linux 8.5 with KDE instead of GNOME. I’d like to install the OwnCloud Desktop client on it, but it doesn’t seem to be available for Rocky Linux.

Here’s the download page for the official OwnCloud desktop client. RHEL 8 is not mentioned here, only CentOS 8 (which is dead now):

https://download.owncloud.com/desktop/ownCloud/stable/latest/linux/download/

I tried the Nextcloud client, but it complains about an “unsupported version” on startup.

I’m a bit puzzled by this, since OwnCloud is a rather popular piece of software. I prefer it to Nextcloud, which has way too much feature creep and an insane development cycle.

Last but not least: I took a peek in Flatpak, but it’s not available there either. Which leaves me clueless.

Any suggestions ?

From this link: The Desktop App for efficient syncing - ownCloud you can also download the appimage and use that. Or directly: https://download.owncloud.com/desktop/ownCloud/stable//2.10.0.6519/linux-appimage/ownCloud-2.10.0.6519.AppImage

They don’t mention “CentOS 8”, but “CentOS 7” (which is not dead). Anyway, no repo for “EL8”.

Ugh. I hate AppImages. Anyway, thanks for the link.

If there are source packages (src.rpm), you could grab them and rebuild (with mock) for Rocky.

You could try whether the packages for EL7 (CentOS) have requirements that are fulfilled by Rocky, but that is far from ideal.

I guess since Owncloud make the packages for CentOS as well as the repo access, perhaps you can ask them to support Rocky, etc.

I just managed to build it fine on Rocky 8.5 / KDE, along with Dolphin plugin, using a Fedora 35 SRPM.
