VIdeo Mode Not Supported when Kickstarting Dell PowerEdge R640

Hi all,

We’re trying to Kickstart a couple of Dell PowerEdge R640 servers and the installer goes to a black screen with the message: Video mode not supported. We’re using Rocky Linux 8.9. We Kickstart servers with Rocky all the time and this is the first time we’ve encountered this error, any thoughts of how we can get past this?

Thanks,
Kevin

Here’s an image of what we’re seeing on the screen. On another server we were able to Kickstart with no interaction, but on this one we need to partition it manually and thus the need for the GUI installer. We tried the text mode installer but it doesn’t seem to allow for partitioning the disk.

Thanks,
Kevin

P.S. Okay, sorry–I don’t actually know how to attach an image. It just says “Video mode not supported”.

Not sure whether Chapter 5. Developing installer add-ons Red Hat Enterprise Linux 8 | Red Hat Customer Portal talks about use or customization (of installer), but it indeed says “limited” on the TUI. With the kickstart one could partition, but then one has to know something about the target system beforehand.

How about VNC? See Chapter 11. Performing a remote RHEL installation by using VNC Red Hat Enterprise Linux 8 | Red Hat Customer Portal

That is what I’ve used when a server had at most a tiny screen.

At this point one should shift to 8.10.
