Rocky's Mattermost chat stuck on loading (again)

Wanted to post this in the site feedback section but I’m not allowed, feel free to move my topic somewhere else.

I (and some others) had this issue where joining chat.rocky get stuck at loading sometimes. Today I have it again, I have tested on my Mac with Safari and Brave and now on Rocky with Firefox as well. Disabled any firewalling/ad blocking on my side and checked the console on Firefox and saw a lot of cookie errors pass and there is some experimental polling enabled that might be related.

I have no knowledge at all on mattermost, just that this issue pops up every now and then for some people. It also seems to fix itself magically after a while but today I was unable to have any channel on chat.rocky load, no matter the browser or OS.

Unfortunatly I have not found a way to fix it or reproduce it but it has happened quite a few times now. Normally after a few hours it all works again. Not today.

There are dozens of these, the cookies name changes but the error is the same. It could be a red herring. They keep on scrolling by as the page it trying to load. I think they could be related. I also see some messages about an experimental polling feature being enabled when digging around in the inspector.

Again might be a red herring, but pollign is exactly what its trying to do (loading the chats/history). If these experimental features can be disabled we can see if that was the cause or not. I don’t think I can toggle it on just my side by editing a cookie or do something in the inspector console.

I am just digging and trying to find out why I can’t load the chat anywhere today. I did clear all site data and cookies in Firefox and also tried a private window. Also used my phone to tether just to be sure it’s not something on my network messing about like a Pi-hole or QoS thing.

Every now and then there is one of two repeating error messages, in the spoiler is a longer console log, maybe this is the cause or past of the “stuck of loading” issue. I just hope I can help to solve it now that I’m affected again. I don’t know for how long I’ll be but I’d gladly try things to see if it fixes the issue and hopefulyl we can dig down to the actual cause of this.

To me it’s very odd that I can’t connect with either one of the big browser engines and two different operating systems and even different wan connections. This must be something odd on mattermost’s side. Please let me know if and which logs I should collect and which things to try to remedy it.

Thanks for the detailed report here! We’ve been in contact with Mattermost about this issue for a while now, and this definitely helps.

What’s odd, is that we’ve noticed the mobile app works just fine… and it’s only some channels this happens on.

It is the first time I’ve seen the “AI” plugin referenced, which is particularly odd given we have that plugin disabled explicitly…

I disabled the Matterpoll extension (which is for asking “Poll”/Survey questions)–can you check if that’s helped?

I also noticed the AI plugin was enabled after an upgrade (though has been unconfigured). I suspect that’s why you were seeing those console errors, but I’m not sure. Either way, it’s disabled again.

Regarding the cookies, I will need to review our config–I suspect they are unrelated, though, as I see them even on a “working” client. The root cause from my perspective appears to be overzealous/invalid caching of roles/permissions somewhere, but I’m waiting on Support to get back to me.

In the MM app, I just did this - click View → Clear Cache and Reload. After that, the channels I had issues with Loading... now load correctly.
