Extras Package
If a wallpaper does not make it to the main package, is simply Rocky inspired, or was simply submitted as an “extra” background, it has the opportunity to be placed into the rocky-backgrounds-extras package. The requirements are more relaxed for the extra backgrounds.
Minimum Resolutions for Extra Backgrounds
For general submissions, we request a high resolution to make things simpler, that way the user is able to choose a wallpaper without having to choose “the right one” for their monitor size. This requirement is more relaxed for the extra backgrounds package. If a submitter wishes not to use the highest resolution but opts to make multiple resolutions instead, they should use the below list as a general guideline:
Minimum Required Resolutions:
16:9 (1920x1080)
16:10 (1920x1200)
5:4 (2048x1536)
4:3 (1280x1024)
Additional (encouraged) allowed resolutions:
3440x1440
2560x1600
2560x1440
2560x1080
1800x1440
Portrait mode versions of the above are optional
The placeholders in this commit shows an example of using the minimum resolutions.
There are already some great submissions!
I stumbled by chance over this call for wallpapers, but the funny thing is, I’m currently working on a Blender short film featuring a red quartz/crystal! As its already quite late here and I reinstalled my system last week, I will try to make some good shots tomorrow - just in time for the deadline - that fit more in the style of a wallpaper. Something like this if you find it fitting (need to re-render in correct size and post-process of course), and I want to go for some different shots, just that you got an idea:
As announced yesterday, here are some shots I took.
Happy to hear feedback or to double down on an idea.
Maybe an abstract wallpaper fits better but wanted to participate nevertheless.
I know I’m late but this is a favorite wallpaper theme of mine, quartz/crystals, in my BSD and Linux Wallpapers. I used to work in Advertising so here is the brand thinking behind the wallpaper.
Rocky Linux as a brand/logo represents pinnacle (technology) and stability. The Wallpaper should bring forth those ideas in an easily accessible expression as a mountain commands your view. It should set expectations quickly and leave you to work without distraction.
I’ve done abstract wallpapers before but I believe Rocky Linux needed to be more “real” as perhaps the users of this distro want a more “real” return investing in this distro vs hobby or distro-hopping alternatives.
In contrast to Alma whose logo is a pentagonal shaped flowering color-wheel with female attributes, I took the opposite tact and went with sharpness all around, simple color scheme with male attributes.
The image is a sharpened, re-aspected, and retouched Unsplash from Etienne Bösiger
The Swiss mountain pictured most likely actually has red quartz in it
The black bar is the same aspect as the logo, over the peak as in the logo (in rough ratio)
The pictured mountain stands roughly in replacement of the abstract brand logo (Logo suggestion) conveying subtle yet sharp and meaningful.
The small pixel and thumbnail versions do not come across the same as tested max 4800x3600 on a premium monitor, the details of the mountain really inspire awe.
The night version is actually tuned down to be more comfortable on the eyes in areas of luminance, specularity, and contrast.
Since I’m late and don’t want to give them away for nothing it’s my license like all my artwork, but if you would like to accept them for use let me know and I will CC them for you. Plus, the actual realism of it may put in into extras, but I think it brings another perspective in contrast to the other entries that may appeal to those who do climb mountains or want something that definitely isn’t AI “looking”.
Thanks,

I know this is after the deadline, but I’m submitting these anyway, as I didn’t see any other photographs submitted. The photos (and a README) are submitted here: RockyBackgroundsRobison.tgz - Google Drive
