Rocky 9.8: VLC broken for x265 since upgrade to ffmpeg-7.1.5

Since RPMfusion upgraded ffmpeg to ffmpeg-7.1.5, it seems vlc can no longer play x265 videos. I get:

“main decoder error: Codec `hevc’ (MPEG-H Part2/HEVC (H.265)) is not supported.”

Possibly relevant packages.

Anyone else seeing this?

Yes it happens from time to time, even if using rpmfusion on Fedora.

Doesn’t have anything to do with Rocky, since VLC is in EPEL, and the h264/265 codecs are from rpmfusion and neither maintained by the Rocky team.

@Danny - open a bug report here https://bugzilla.redhat.com . Select Fedora → Fedora EPEL

Note that ffmpeg can sometimes be in two repos at once, and that appears to be the case here.

Thanks all. I’ve moved this query over to Bugzilla / EPEL.
