Rocky 8.10 - libayatana-appindicator3.so.1 install

Hello
I am looking for
libayatana-appindicator3.so.1
for rocky 8.10
I have found it for rocky 9 & 10 but nothing for 8.
Is there a reason for this?
Thank you

Hi,

Because that package is provided by EPEL and they don’t currently provide a release for RHEL 8. You could raise a request:-

Regards Tom.

I have opened a ticket in EPEL bug report. Thank you for your advice.

If a one-off requirement, it should be quick and easy to build with mock using src rpm from a Fedora release 40 or 41..

To be honest, I have no idea how to do build a version . What I do see is that it is already available for EL9 & EL10 so maybe there are others who are interested in EL8 too. Thank you for your advice.

Hello, I have opened a ticket with EPEL that is going nowhere at all … so maybe mock is an option. I have no idea how packaging works. In this case where version 9 & 10 exist, I presume that the rpm’s content is the same, but the manifest of the rpm is different. (I’m really sure what I am talking about either)

I had a go when you posted with the Fedora 41 source rpm from here: Overview - rpms/libayatana-appindicator - src.fedoraproject.org

Sadly it didn’t work, and I didn’t delve deeper to find out what else it was missing, but assume some kind of dependency version problem. I have managed to build rpms before, like audacity for example using the Fedora 41 source rpms, but I guess I was just lucky in that instance.

Some of the Rocky team build rpms from scratch - Skip does this and could no doubt help out, and I have tried before when I wanted to package for myself pycharm, but couldn’t figure it out and gave up. I just wanted to unpack the pycharm tar file and then package it, but the rpmbuild process kept complaining about a dependency, despite the fact that the dependency was included itself in the unpacked archive.

Thank you for trying. If you failed then I don’t think I’ll start.

It seems to be a Ubuntu friendly service. There is a CMAKE in the link. DO you think that this is what is needed to build an EL8 version ?

cmake should build it as it’s not distro specific. Obviously the dependency package names will vary from EL distros to Deb distros, but it’s easy enough to search with dnf and get the appropriate ones installed.

It looks like the package in only available in the form I need in Rocky 9, so it looks like I am going to have to find an alternative solution. Thank you for your help
