Today i installed Rocky Linux for the first time

I’m very happy with it it has Very good performance

but two of the things i didn’t liked was the limited package collection

and the fact that i needed to install the amdgpu driver from amd com to enable amdgpu for my old radeon gpu because the kernel doesn’t support it.

PS: i don’t how to change my profile image on this forum ?

Hi @chrisfromgreece It’s not uncommon on older architecture to have to install third-party repository or even a straight rpm package to get functionality.

What version of Rocky did you install? Did you add any third-party or extra repositories? If not, you might try that too. For instance enable the CRB and EPEL repositories and then see if the packages you are wanting are available. Also, maybe specifically reply here with packages you are looking for and we can hep you more. Welcome to the community!

Hi , thanks for the reply

yes i have enabled crb and epel

also i have installed other software f

from repos and many more from flatpaks.

Rocky has what RHEL has and Red Hat keeps RHEL lean (as that means less packages that they commit to maintain). As already said, there are third party package repos for RHEL (and hence for Rocky). Flatpaks are indeed an option too – RH even suggests some (for applications that they do not support).

This is repeat of the above – Red Hat does not support hardware drivers (kernel modules) for everything. Hence both very new and very old devices lack support. For this, the ELRepo is the usual go-to external repo. They build many modules for RHEL kernels.

I too had to fetch that amdgpu for el9, but el10’s kernel seems to have it. For RX 9070 XT.

The apparent Red Hat rationale for dropping old drivers out from new major version of RHEL relates to question: if you have old piece of hardware and you install new OS that you could use a decade, then how fresh that hardware will be ten years from now?

It has perfect performance on my pc and it is really fast on any aspect and even on graphics it gets every single drop of performance from that old gpu of mine.
