QEMU-KVM cdrom passthrough not working

I now find that I can no longer access the physical host CD-ROM device from a qemu-kvm virtual machine. This was working just fine when my host was CentOS-6, and I could attach and detatch the CD-ROM reader at will from a running VM. I know I used it in January, 2023 to install a TurboTax DVD on a Windows VM. Now I just get an error message, “Driver ‘host cdrom’ is not whitelisted.”

Google search results suggest that this was disabled back in RHEL-7 “… unless someone can make a business case” for allowing it. Does anyone know of a workaround? I see this as a huge regression that greatly downgrades the usefulness of RHEL for me.
