9.4 kde install fails (no gui when starting from usb install media) on hp 14-ep1063cl laptop

This is a (low end) intel core 3 100u based laptop using integrated graphics. The install hangs with a blinking cursor (i.e. i never see anything after booting, no welcome screen, no splash, just a blank screen with a blinking cursor). I can get to the cli (via ctl-alt F2). Inspecting /var/log/messages, issues seem to start near

kplashqm[<pid>]: The wayland connection broke. Did the wayland compositor die?
...
Process <pid> (kmserver) of user 1000 dumped core.

I’ll attempt a cli only install and then try to install kde from there so I can grab better logs.

If someone can point me in the right direction (something to grep for in /var/log/messages or elsewhere) it would be appreciated. So far google for the errors i see has got me nowhere.

EDIT:
Rocky-x86_64-minimal.iso (9.4) the gui installer comes up, wifi connects, installs, & reboots into rocky linux. However, no wifi at that point. No amount of bringing up the interface, nmcli, nmtui, etc worked for me - lost patience.

Kubuntu 24.04.1 LTS just worked, so that’s what I’m going with.

I leave this post open for a few days as I’m willing to boot the Rocky-9.4-KDE-x86_64-20240506.1.iso install media one more time and grep for an error if that will help someone.

Maybe next time.

The minimal install doesn’t include the NetworkManager-wifi package. You would be better using the DVD image at this point or doing a network installation and ensure that package gets installed.

The other alternative, once installed from minimal, plug in ethernet cable and then install the missing package. Then configure wifi.

Thank you for responding.

No (easy) wifi setup tools on the minimal iso makes sense. I also don’t have a wired connection for the laptop yet otherwise I would have tried that.

As I’ve moved on, I’ll close this.
