When I try to upgrade from Rocky Linux 9.7 with xrdp server and xrdp-selinux installed (both at version 0.10.6-1.el9) from epel, I run into an error message: Error: Problem 1: cannot install the best update candidate for package xrdp-selinux-1:0.10.6-1.el9.x86\_64 - nothing provides selinux-policy \>= 38.1.75-2.el9\_8 needed by xrdp-selinux-1:0.10.6-2.el9.x86\_64 from epel Problem 2: package xrdp-selinux-1:0.10.6-1.el9.x86\_64 from @System requires xrdp = 1:0.10.6-1.el9, but none of the providers can be installed - cannot install both xrdp-1:0.10.6-2.el9.x86\_64 from epel and xrdp-1:0.10.6-1.el9.x86\_64 from @System - problem with installed package xrdp-selinux-1:0.10.6-1.el9.x86\_64 - cannot install the best update candidate for package xrdp-1:0.10.6-1.el9.x86\_64 - nothing provides selinux-policy \>= 38.1.75-2.el9\_8 needed by xrdp-selinux-1:0.10.6-2.el9.x86\_64 from epel (try to add ‘–allowerasing’ to command line to replace conflicting packages or ‘–skip-broken’ to skip uninstallable packages or ‘–nobest’ to use not only best candidate packages) Upgrading Rocky with “dnf update --nobest” works, but remains xrdp on the old version. But the error is still there. It seems, that Rocky 9.8 upgraded selinux-policy to 38.1.75-2.el9 but xrdp wants 38.1.75-2.el9\_8 which in not in the Rocky Repositories. What can I do to solve that problem? ---

About the only thing would be to open a bug report with Rocky to fix their package names. In RH9 the package is `38.1.75-2.el9_8` so it should be the same in Rocky as well which as we can see it’s not. No idea why the naming convention isn’t the same for Rocky packages, but it’s not the first time it’s occurred. ---

I have a fistful of RL 9 boxes that were reachable via RDP using Remmina, but after some updates, it no longer works. Is there a way to fix it? Hand holding style do this then do that steps to make it work again would really be appreciated. ---

No specific solutions jump out to me from your log output, but based on my past experience with xrdp, there are a couple of things that I always do around updates: 1. Exclude `'*xrdp*'` from yum/dnf update commands when there are any active xrdp sessions running. 2. Restart the service (`systemctl restart xrdp`) after any xrdp packages are updated. If you haven’t already done so since updating, one of the first things I’d recommend is to restart xrdp because this doesn’t happen automatically as part of the package update (or at least didn’t in the past). If you can safely reboot, that’s even better — it will naturally clear any “orphaned” sessions that might prevent a user from connecting. ---

I have ssh’ed into the box and updated via DNF (usually use the Gnone Software Update) and rebooted. No dice. What seems to have happened is an update a couple of weeks ago caused this. The log indicates a missing file. I just tried DNF and it found nothing so I rebooted. Still no dice. ---

There are at least two additional log files you might want to look at for more info: xrdp-sesman.log (in /var/log) and `.xorgxrdp.10.log` (in the home directory of the user trying to log in). Of these two, the second is more likely to tell you something useful. Note that the file name of this second log might vary. As long as you’re using `xorgxrdp` as the session backend, the log should be named like `.xorgxrdp.{display_number}.log`. ---

I’ll take a look. But the question remains, why did doing a routine update via Gnome Software Update break this? And has it happened to anyone else? And is there any hope that a future update will fix it? ---

Nobody can answer the questions without seeing **ALL** logs related to xrdp. Until then nobody can say what broke it, and if an update will fix it. That said, Gnome is known to be problematic with xrdp anyway. I’ve mostly ran it with LXDE, XFCE, or other light desktop environments. ---

I’m starting to grasp as straws to get my remote access back. I enabled screen sharing in the Gnome preferences and tried to connect with Remmina via VNC. It goves a similar error “error connecting to Xorg - check log Error connecting to user session” so something in addition to RDP seems goobered. ---

And what do the logs say then? Please copy and paste the logs here. If we cannot see the logs we cannot help. Please don’t provide screenshots either, the one you provided was so small and sideways you cannot even read it. ---

Is selinux enabled on this system? If so, I’d be tempted to do this: ```auto setenforce 0 ``` and then try to connect to the machine. I’m just wondering if those `can't set process group ID` errors are being caused by that. ---

I wonder if attempting to log in as the root user is the problem. Is there any good reason to log in as root, instead of logging in as a regular user? Does it work if you log in as regular user? I further note that the tsusers file doesn’t exist (according to that logfile). ---

No I disable SELinux. As mentioned, this worked great for a long time but some update around two weeks ago killed it on seven different boxes. ---

I logged in as a normal user and got the same result. If anyone can figure out if a recent update did something to make this happen, that would reveal the root cause I think. ---
